Tins (Oxo, Old Holborn etc)

There's a certain romance about an old tobacco tin that a new plastic tub will never achieve.

Having said that, Sistema do a wide range of clip-close, gasketed, waterproof tubs and boxes in a very wide range of sizes. Bit more expensive than Ikea but if you need the kit to be watertight these are worth using.

I'm guessing the Ikea ones will be watertight to a small degree for a while, so that should do me, anyway everything will be in topbox/panniers or waterproof bag so should be ok but i will check out Sistema just for the sake of it, thanks.

Hi, Kiwi polish tins are good although need to watch the clasp on the side, agree that travel sweet tins are good and snug fit. Should try the jumble sales and brick a brack stalls etc amazing what can find there.

If you can take your time about it, and you don't mind plastic - you could do worse than the large size of peanut butter, I think its 700g.

I did look at Sistema but bit expensive for I would need them for so i'll take a wizz out to Ikea later on Monday and see what other crap i can pick up (soz typo) goodies i can buy

I now hate Ikea wih a passion, went in for something costing £3.50 and had to walk over a mile to get to the checkout, who designed that place Stevie Wonder?

Lock & lock are pretty good, a little bit more expensive, but have a look on amazon.
A little bit nostalgic, but the old baccy tins were far better quality years ago, used to have loads when i was a child, if only i had known to keep them. IMHO things were far better quality years ago, you got quality as a course, now its just cheap as possible, unless you are willing to pay for it.

I had an old RN tobacco tin which is pretty substantial, the last time I saw it it was full of the missuses sewing stuff, I hadn't even noticed she'd 'claimed' it, I'll have to see if I can win it back. I'm sure I've got another couple somewhere too although I'm a big fan of tupaware now, rugged and waterproof, not so good for fire right enough.

Yes agree with old stuff way better then today's junk you get, but for what i need it for the cheapo stuff from Ikea wil do, I would buy Lock & Lock but it would have to be way cheaper then what it is now so maybe i'll keep my eye out in sales after crimbo.

My daughter has a thing for the Lush range of toiletries. They sometimes have tiddly little tins with a dollop of "stuff" in to try for a pound or larger ones to buy product in (face/hair/body/lippy stuff). I think the smallest are about 10p piece size the largest about 3" across - all round with screw tops.
She refers to them as mums 'prepping tins' and recently bought me a selection of them in various sizes as a treat.
I now have one of the smallest ones in my fire kit with Vaseline in and one in my first aid kit with sudocream in. - I can think of endless possibilities for the other sizes!

I've got a tiny little tin just available to me, about the size of a tin of shoe polish (very old coconut oil from The Body Shop it had gone rancid) - wondering what I can use it for in prepping terms, I could make up a little sewing kit, which people were talking of on here, or I could do the fun thing and start some emergency fishing preps

Ta-da! I got bored this evening, hunted out the stash of sewing and craft gear, and the little Body Shop tin is now the proud home to:
- skein of beautiful linen thread that must be 50 years old.
- modern set of thin thread, various colours.
- 2 x 2 buttons, 1 set small, 1 set average.
- 1 thread puller
- set of needles.
It's very light! It's going to live in my mobile first aid kit - the one that gets slung over my shoulder if I have to evacuate at short notice - flash flood, gas leak, family illness, etc.
