Hello - sorry, I've not been responding to these messages, I've been covering Belgian terrorists in Brussels and I was thinking about how one could have prepared for Paris?

Additionally - do you think Paris has had an impact on how people understand personal responsibility and preparing for worst case scenarios?

Yes, it's true, we have a paywall - I'm very sorry about that. My name is Stefanie Marsh and you can see my Brussels/Molenbeek article top three pars. Rudolf was the first thing that came into my mind.

What do you think of preppers who have firearms and other tools that could be used as weapons (except pocket knives)?

I still don't understand why there are so few women preppers, as far as I can see from the people I have talked to.

Thank you for that Mumsnet link - I was really surprised to see it, and had no idea.

Any more thoughts welcome. Thank you for all your help so far.

Absolutely, Paris is a global story, its understandable. But why not make this thread a little bit more two-way, Stephanie, and answer a couple of the questions I posed to you back on the second page. This is the end of my post on that page:

You're welcome. All of the above is on this forum here and there, so I'm just collating, really.

Will you let us know what you write? Will you bring the link to what you write to this thread? Will you stay around to answer questions about what you've written?
And what do you think of the information we've already written on this thread, apart from surprise that so few women describe themselves as preppers?

And there it is....

The main reason the Press aren't that welcome.

It's always portrayed that guns, bows, crossbows spears, knifes, axes are weapons, they are tools used to carry out specific tasks. Can they be used for nefarious tasks yes, but......

https://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q338.htm

http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/l_to_o/offe ... _articles/

The definition of an offensive weapon is any article made or adapted for use for causing injury to the person, or intended by the person having it with him for such use by him, or by some other person. (N.B. this definition includes a disguised knife).

It is an offence to have in your possession an offensive weapon in a public place.

So by the letter of the law, anything can be classed as a weapon even your newspaper, rolled up tight and brandished......

And why "except pocket knifes" they can cause injury too?
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

As soon as a journo starts asking questions about weapons don't bother. You know exactly how any article is going to turn out.

Oh dear Stefanie, you've just shot yourself in the foot (there's a pun if ever I heard one).

You're quite right, they are looking to back up their own preconception of the stereotype, in truth in the worst case scenarios, everyone could lay hands on something as Pseudonym points out.

I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

The timing of the weapons question may have something to do with whats happening with regards to the new gun laws being forced through in the wake of the paris attrocity.

Without getting political we all know that terrorists dont get their guns via legal channels so unless your incredibly stupid or you have an anti-gun agenda you will know that any new laws passed will only effect the honest law abiding shooters of the EU & wont stop something like the Paris attack from happening again, because terrorists ignore the law, you would kinda think politicians would know that.

Under the new proposals shooting sports in the UK will be dealt another devestating blow & will see many leaving the hobby through no fault of their own & the public will not be any safer from these vicious terrorist attacks

They want everyone afraid & unable to fend for themselves, that way we are forced to look to the government's for everything. Ill leave it at that, because this kind of badly drafted knee jerk/seen to do somthing politics makes me livid.

I think you're being very charitable. I think most people know exactly why the question came up. Just another journo who waited, said all the right things but who will produce just the usual lazy arsed sensational nonsense we've seen before. I believe the zero tolerance of journalists should be reinstated.

Many many years ago, when I was in Mag court for assault (it was self defense, but, i came out on top after a failed attempted mugging) i was charged with using 'an offensive weapon in a public place with the intent to cause harm', and, that offensive weapon was what i had in my hand at the time, a can of Pepsi MAX. Yep, because i used it in self defense, struck this clown who had a knife, right in the side of the skull and dropped him, drawing blood, i was arrested for GBH and using an offensive weapon lol

ANYTHING can be a weapon if you can improvise, twig off a branch, dust from the gutter, car aerial, small child or animal running past (joking lol), anything you can hold, could be weaponised, including a newspaper (in many ways)

You're right about newspaper being used as a weapon, our descendants will look back at our era, at the hate and fear they spread, it's always been about selling papers and advertising plus promoting/nurturing a certain point of view, I think we forget that news, what is going on, can be and is presented in a manipulative manner. In future I hope we are more responsible.
