I just checked me little book about leeks in pots. It says "as plants develop, gradually draw compost up the lower stems to keep them white."
I'm still a bit confused about new tatties - do I need to shore them up when the shoots come through until the tub is full of compost?
What's everybody planting this year ?
Re: What's everybody planting this year ?
Potatoes, peas, carrots, green beans, broccoli, courgette, spinach, onions, garlic.
Gooseberry, blackcurrant, strawberry, raspberry, apple, rhubarb.
The boys are growing cucumber and cherry tomatoes.
And we'll be collecting blackberries, sloes and rosehips again from the wild...

Yes. As soon as you see green shoots poking out then shove some more compost over them and keep on doing that until the tub is full yes.

Only growing a bit of each! An experiment really to see what works. And it's all part of my physiotherapy. Today we worked on bringing my bicycle up to scratch - I haven't been able to ride it since last June - my physio still wont let me ride it though (unless I'm covered in bubblewrap)!diamond lil wrote:My god hobo, you could start yur own Dig for Victory movement

Are you still improving though ?
Re: What's everybody planting this year ?
I have shallots and garlic just coming through.
Planted 4 varieties of potatoes the other day, but only 4 of each in bags.
Sowed some broad beans, salad and radish.
Set out a new strawberry bed, but won't let these fruit this year (I will need iron willpower ).
Am trying to weed around my currant bushes and raspberry canes.
On the window ledges in the house I have a couple of varieties of tomatoes and peppers. Also courgettes and summer squash. It will be another month before I can plant these out.
I also intend to sow this week (in pots in the house) cucumber, aubergine and various types of squash/pumpkins. Also mini sweetcorn and spinach. I have been saving my toilet roll tubes so might try the minicorn in those so that I can plant them straight out when the weather is warm enough.
I need to look up when to sow brocolli and kale so that I don't miss that window. Will sow runner and french beans at the end of May, and oriental veg over the summer. Plus more salad stuff.
I know a secret-ish supply of wild plums so I'll be making wild plum jam later this year yum yum yum!
Not sure if I have space for turnips and swedes - it depends how much weeding I can get done on the allotment over the summer!
Itsy you might have to check sowing times for your 'heavy' veg as some will probably need to be started off soon.

My god woman, do you live in a field ? Well I'm sick of trying bloody veg, just found that out of a whole pkt of syboes only 4 have come through, same thing happened last year. Might just try chives instead And onions I love but think they end up costing more than shop bought.
