I cant grow anything in winter, think the hours of daylight are too short here. I tried often, even facing south but they go all pale and limp. Bit like meself

It may be something we preppers need to consider, the possibility of HAVING to grow indoors, whether due to the weather, or pollution or due to the fact the chavvies that live down the road are nicking the veg!
Not cheap to set up though......

this explains it a bit better.

Think that takes a bit of electricity though doesn't it?

My grandad used too grow leeks in cut up plastic drainpipes as the leeks grew he would top the pipe up a little with soil, they always seemed to grow straight, white and quite big.
I think the pipes were cut too 18 inches in lengh so he could push them down deep into the soil so they didn't fall over.
He always started his veg seeds in the cardboard centres of loo rolls, placed inside seed trays, he swore they grew stonger.
Alas I didn't inherit his green fingers, so I;m planting fruit bushes; black currant, redcurrant & blueberries, Rhubarb, goosberries, strawberries and some herbs mainly chives, basil, mint, sage & oregano.

Thanks Ro, I might try something along those lines, leeks are handy because they stand the cold. I like to hear all the old ways of doing things, think that generation knew a lot that we have lost.
I planted a whole pkt of syboe seeds and have just FOUR came through. That four are 4" tall now and still no others appeared

Be nice too to hear old fashioned (non electrical mainly) ways of storing the harvest gluts. :)
I`m looking this year at tattie clamp, and sandboxes for carrots and apples (which will have to be bought in, having no apples that`ll grow up here!) so if anyone stores veg without canning, bottling, or using electricity please be kind and share tips :D

I think it would be good to find out about sand boxes and root cellars and such like, as you say Red Doe, without using electricity.

Now this will store a serious amount of produce!

If he did that here it would turn into an indoor swimming pool fast. I hope he lives somewhere dry !
