As ItsyBitsy said, Oven should be avoided, though, of course, for some things they are the only way, unless someone knows how to bake a pie , from scratch by microwave. Don't warm those plates in the oven, Use them instead of saucepan lids. Hot dishes for free!

In simple energy usage terms, Microwave wins hands down, simply because all the energy input goes into heating the food. Your microwave might use 1000 Watts, but can heat up or cook your food in a few minutes. Your Oven maybe uses 2000W to 3000W and might need to be on for a couple of hours. Stove tops are not much better in that the electric hobs might be 1000W and unless your Pan is optimum size, with a lid, you will waste energy warming your cooker and cooker hob and kitchen and Pumping heat outdoors through your extractor.

For COOKING Meat, Stews, and soups, For simmering, My vote goes to the Slow cooker which burns between 100W and 150W, Something like 10% of a hob ring or 5% of an oven.
Slow cooker to COOK it. Perfect for simmering.
Microwave to Re-Heat it ( If you must )
Ovens for baking.... And if the oven is on... Fill it!!!!
If you must use the hob, use a pressure cooker or shallow fry super quickly..

Most efficient way to cook on the hob is to get an induction hob or single standalone ring /s

Just heats the pan something around 85% efficiency Vs radiant rings which are around the 65% efficient depending on which article you read

My induction hobs are rated between 1.7 and 3.7KW but switch on and off to reduce the energy input at lower settings i have just thrown a table together to help me decide the most energy efficient way to cook things which may help. You will need to multiply the figures by your actual cost per KWH to get prices but you can see which options are most energy efficient for a given task.

I'm surprised one hob is so high. My whole oven is only 2.6. My mini oven is 1.5. But as you say, your hobs won't run at full blast most of the time. Like my gas hobs can go to almost minimum once something has boiled.

Todays prep involved updating my bugout bag lists. Just getting the winter version ready and replacing some essential oils I stupidly opened, reducing the life. Don't open them if you want the full shelf life.

We use our microwave a lot,and an air fryer. So quick,especially for the two of us. Looks like the slow cooker will get used a bit too! Mrs J told me to make sure that the microwave is switched off after use too. ;) Good point. It is good that we have this technology though,isn’t it?

Another set of kit I have to look at is my garden full of approach lights. Ok,they are 10w LED ,but I think I will leave the one over the workshop door on. The rest can go off. The one over the back door can be switched on and off as needed. Frankly,they are not that effective at preventing intruders,as we found out some years ago when there was an attempted burglary at 3am. The place was lit like Blackpool illuminations! Even with lights on,I still go out with an LED headlamp too.

I pulled the hob specs from the manufacturers manual. As an induction hob each hob has a different size & maximum power. I dont like to think too hard about the ovens. The manual was very quiet about those so I have used a typical figure there which seems about right for the overall cooker rating.
I foresee a lot of microwave, pressure and thermal cooking in our future.

I am also starting to update favourite recipes to show the energy estimates.
This is my batch cook chilli calculation
Frying onions & beef 30 mins @ 50%
Heat up beans & Simmer 30 mins @50%
Frozen Meal reheat circa 5mins per 2 portions for 6 meals = 0.5KWh
Total Energy = 1.5KWH
Total energy per portion = 0.125 KWh/portion
Cost @ 51p/KWh = 6.4p a portion

This does not take into account the weekly cost of the freezer which will add to the overall cost of the batch cook. I need to do some sums on that at it might cancel out the savings from batch cooking.

Today we had jacket potato's that teenager made using the oven for ages.

So we did enough for today's dinner, plus extras to freeze. Plus made a tub of roasties up as the oven was on anyway
when it comes to catastrophic events, we never know when the day before is the day before. So we prepare for tomorrow

Good idea.

I hardly use hot water for washing up now. I just rub my plate with a scrubber with lots of soap and rinse it under the cold tap. I'm veggie anyway, and don't eat much greasy food. If I fry mushrooms or an egg I just use a few squirts of 1 cal and a teflon pan. Wash the pan same as the plate. I drink black coffee so mugs are fine in cold water with a brush. Stuff like veg I microwave in a bowl and chuck it in cold water to soak for a bit, then wash as above. Mini oven trays (nonstick), as above. Cutlery as above!

No one uses the bath, just quick showers. Shower has a limiter.

Well this morning I had a shower came down the stairs and got dripping water on my head in the hall.. new bath waste trap and that's cured it blooming things

Please don't skimp on hot water for dishes. You get food poisoning that way - I used to work in an infectious diseases hospital and that was one of the things that always came up.
