I knew this would come up! As I mentioned, my dishwasher cleans better than I do. It’s a small one and I run it only when full, though if I over fill it it doesn’t clean so well. About once a year there’s a discussion in a national newspaper about hand washing vs the dishwasher and invariably someone will write in to say that they wash up all their dishes and pots using only half a pint of water. I exaggerate for effect. I didn’t have one for years and I definitely prefer the clean dishes I get with the dishwasher.

It's 15 years old, refuses to clean saucepans or anything tomato sauce has touched...
... And stomps upstairs saying she's too busy to do it

We have that problem with the automatic dishwasher loading / unloading unit it's 12 years old and if it doesn't get done after the first ask it looses it's mobile phone (the agreement was that she could have a mobile and a basic phone / data package of she did the dishwasher) even better is you don t need to physically remove the phone from her possession she sussed that out quick... But android parental control we can just remotely lock it so it becomes useless and when locked it'll only ring me or mumJerseyspud wrote: ↑Sat Aug 27, 2022 9:38 pm I have a dishwasher. Aye and husbands aren't always that much better. My dishwasher is called Jimmy and prone to wandering off to watch telly or youtube

Unfortunately it's apparently unacceptable to smack it on the top like a old TV set that won't show a picture
Today's tasks are minimal need to give the hedge a trim but I burried the petrol can when I tidied the shed

The surfactants in the washing up liquid will essentially solubilise the oils and fats and then loosen the bonds that hold the food to the plate etc. then when you scrub and rinse they come off with the water. If the surface is free from these, then there is very little for bacteria to grow on. Hotter the water the easier- but realistically anything over 40 will do the job. Higher temperatures will actually denature bacteria viruses etc - but you have to get to 70+ to do it quickly. All that can be undone with a dirty dish towel mind you - best to let air dry. You get food poisoning that way - I used to work in an infectious diseases hospital and that was one of the things that always came up.
I wash my plates with loads of soap straight after using them. I wet the plate, squirt soap onto my scrubber, then scrub the plate thoroughly, then rinse the soap off.

I've never liked the idea of tea towels, so I always air dry. I scrub everything wetted, with a scrubber with a load of soap on, and rinse it off. I check it is 100% clean. So the soap is much more concentrated than in a bowl full of water. I think one of my lodgers doesn't rinse after washing. I don't like that, but not much I can do about it. I don't like the idea of the dirty water drying on the dishes. Especially as they aren't veggie.Evergog wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 8:31 pmThe surfactants in the washing up liquid will essentially solubilise the oils and fats and then loosen the bonds that hold the food to the plate etc. then when you scrub and rinse they come off with the water. I'm off to go collect my niece's birthday present from Argos shortly. I added a set of 2 camping lights and a couple of large multipacks of batteries to the order to make the journey a little more efficient Interestingly, one of the reviews on the camping lights said they were buying them in case of inevitable power cuts.
