I just turned my kitchen TRV down as the room's warmer due to me plugging a 40mm diameter hole in the wall I'd forgotten about. The central heating pipes all went ballistic, banging like crazy. I was scared they'd break a soldered joint. Anyway, think I've got it sorted now. I changed the position of the TRV slightly and turned the heating off for a bit. Then ran it for a while to test it. Hopefully that was just a one off.

I just heard a loud noise from upstairs. I thought next door was using a power tool. They've just moved in and have been decorating. My bathroom radiator was vibrating. In the end I tweaked the TRV down and the noise stopped. So it must have been that.

Not sure what to make of all this!

This is exactly it. It's a bit "let them it cake!" - someone with no actual experience of living at the sharp end, telling folk who do it on a daily basis how to handle it.

Playing with the boiler temperature and radiator settings and whatnot saved a fortune this year. My bills have actually gone down slightly or stayed the same, compared to last year. The flow temp is set to 56C, pretty much guaranteeing that the boiler will condense, and the thermostat is in the coolest spot in the house. The heating is guaranteed to come on when the rest of the house cools, but tends to warm only for a degree or two before switching off. Last year I used a lot more gas, mainly because I didn't know what I was doing.

Two duvets on the bed helped too, I didn't really need the electric blanket. The stove got used too, but I'm trying to keep the wood for necessary times, rather than having it on for decoration. I will confess to having a radiant heater for emergencies, but it's hardly been used, only a couple of times during the really cold spell.

Sounds like water hammer. Pressure in the system can fight against the TRV.

Could well be. I think we might have had this a few times recently, and I assumed it was next door using power tools.

This time in the bathroom as I say, it stopped when I turned the TRV down. But after I posted, I turned the heating off, and started hearing banging again. I wasn't sure where from. I'd turned the bathroom one all the way up to check it didn't need bleeding. This time, turning the bathroom TRV down didn't stop the banging, but it gradually faded and stopped as the heating was off.

Then I set the bathroom TRV to 2 and left it, ran the heating for a bit and turned it off. No noises! Fingers crossed it will behave itself. At least I know what it is, and I'm not ignoring it thinking it's the neighbours.

Decided to check which way they were. As I suspected, the kitchen rad and bathroom towel rail are on the wrong way. Had to turn them back up to tell. Fortunately no noise this time turning back down and then c/h off. We need to get these things set and just leave them! If it keeps happening I'll have to get them swapped round.
