Thermal cameras

Post by GeraldTheBonzai »

Anyone got any experience / uses / recommendations for a thermal camera?
There are several available on Amazon from brands like Topdon and Hikmicro, with a wide range of prices. However, they all appear to have quite low resolution (240x240 etc).

Having never seen one in the flesh, am unsure if this is an issue.

Usage would be for thermal leakage, like loft insulation, or radiator efficiency.

I got a second hand lidl parkside one it's adequate.. found a fire waiting to happen so it's paid for itself.. not the best resolution but if works ..

This is the corner of our lounge..

The wall above the vivarium isn't insulated the wall over the window has grenfell type pir cladding

You can see where next doors party wall joins (the houses are stepped)

My recommendation would be to hire a specialist thermal imaging camera unless you do this in a brand new house - if it is a brand new house, then hire a specialist who will make a thorough report and NHBC will use it against the builder. It took me more than 5 years to fix. Also, you are late now, unfortunately- the survey should be done in the coldest time of the year for more obvious results that are hard to dispute by the builder
I bought Pulsar Axion 2 XG35 LRF a few years ago for hunting. Then it was arguably the best thermal spotter as I compared it with Swarovski and others. However, I would now buy much cheaper one - its advantages are quite negligible when compared with Hikmicro, but way more expensive. Though gives you right to brag 😆

For thermal leak checks and radiator efficiency, even a 160x120 or 240x240 cam can be surprisingly useful, you’re looking for hotspots and cold drafts, not fine detail. I’ve used a FLIR ONE before (the smartphone attachment type), and it was more than enough to spot cold patches around windows and badly insulated loft corners
