Starlink satalite internet

Post by Yorkshire Andy »

Been playing with this a couple of weeks now and this will be posted by the magic white dish (well A4 ISH size rectangle)

So what is star link??

A rich Americans satalites based internet connection using a load of low orbit satalites that orbit the globe beaming down the Intterweb to those who have the magic dish...

Costs start at a few pence under £6 a month for standby use this gives low speed internet 100 mbs is £35 a month for a fixed location you can get mobile use and it begins getting pricey

Before buying you can download their app from play store or the apple equivalent then use the tools to see if your intended location is suitable...

So if it's happy it should work

Next you can get the whole set up via them and get tied into a contract or as I did ordered a mini dish from Curries which is £179 at the moment

In the box you get a dish with a fold out "stand" for ground siting and a pole clamp bracket.. a AC power supply and a long 15m ISH DC jack to DC jack cable ...

Don't bin the box you'll need the kit code on the label (serial number)

Use the app to select service you want it's all on the app viewable pre purchase to peruse ....

The set up tells you what to do and when starting with alignment then plan selection then payment details... Set up a personal WiFi access password and your on line

Point dish the way it tells you the bracket angles it fine on flat ground...

I used a sky dish J bracket on the shed for now nice and secure

I'm amazed ISH that I can get WiFi on my allotment 55m away it's almost clear line of sight .... In the house front way upstairs signal gets a bit weak I've added a generic WiFi repeater to solve that issue ... I've actually added 2 of them that gives me nearly full strength signal all over the house ..

But shtf it'll be starlinks own inbuilt only to minimise power use .. that's my next set of tests  I've ordered a car adapter so I can run it via 12v from a car / car battery and a usbc which is a bit more temperamental needing a minimum of a 65w pd usb power supply.... Which I have a few of....

To be continued....

Ps this was uploaded by starlink

If you've found this useful and put your hand in your pocket

Here's my referral link totally transparent you use this link below you get your second month at your chosen tariff free and I get a month free no obligation no gun to your head im not sponsored by them I bought it with my own money

So what's the pros

Dependence from the local grid and telecoms.. power cuts / storms knocking down the phone lines I've still got Comms via voip (WiFi calls via mobile phone) and the likes of WhatsApp / messenger and I can still get on line... Even if the local area has say a major blackout and the fiber / exchange /.mobile transmitters go down
..

Probably Sunday I'll get my power stations out and have a play with the alternative power supplies I know they are power hungry but it's another option and been semi portable the cars close enough for the unit to think it's at home if I lay the dish on the car roof and plug into the fag lighter

The units got a snow mode if it detects snow or Ice forming on the dish it's got its own inbuilt deicing mode

Nice one, tempted but holding out for now.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Well done for taking the plunge. Nice prep for local outages of power or comms or if Mr P cuts the undersea cables.
But as with everything, comes with it's own set of risks - e.g. solar storms or anti-satellite activities and the less said about the company's owner the better....

I love the idea of the tech, and combined with my loathing of Virgin Media, its something I've been considering. However the price point is probably a bit too high and combined with the availability of high speed broadband where I am, its a bit hard to justify. At the moment.

The other slight issue I have with Starlink, and this is just personal, is that, as an amateur astrophotographer, the damn things ruin my photos.....

Must admit Musk isn't my favourite person in the world

But

We are still on a copper BT line as chance would have it over the past 2 weeks they have started pulling in new fiber overhead and fiber nodes added to the telecom poles down the street ... But when our BT line started playing up 2 years ago we got told it's be £120+vat if the fault was our equipment... Well at that time we was out of broadband contract so had great pleasure of telling them to cut us off Completely and do one which they really didn't like but a local independent telecom firm had put fiber in the road so we went to them ... It's been ok but it's now dropping out at random and slow peak times as more jump on the service.. get every excuse going "conflicting with neighbours WiFi" "err so explain how my smart TV keeps freezing" "poor WiFi"
" It's on a cat 6 eithernet cable plugged into the router"

"Errr errr errrr errmmmm "

And starlink half hour later I got sidetracked with the kids wanting feeding

The plane I’m on tomorrow has a starlink attached so will be using that one.

There’s other options though and we are meant to be producing a U.K. version from next year so if I was going for one, I would wait for that. Buy local etc

Good shout, I would still wait for a European or U.K. version, I don’t trust American companies at the moment but that’s just me.
