All these jobs.....you’ll have to start a night shiftKiwififer wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2026 8:53 am Ouch! I’ve been cutting the grass and I’m away to start trimming up the communal spaces the council don’t want to touch but cause kids to walk on the road. Don’t get me started, Edinburgh Clowncil are as useful as boobies on a bull.
I also need to get patio cleaner today and the hose for my Karcher washer needs replaced. That’s before I start painting my fence again, it also needs fixed as part of it broke two years ago and my neighbour propped it back up with batons (the posts are in his side so I can’t really do much about it. Of yeah, new shed needs a coat…
A busy few weekends coming up.

Daughter number 1 been served with a section 21 notice no fault eviction as the landlord has been honest and said he has no energy time or money to bring property up to the new standards required from may 1st when new rules come in
She can't get another private rental as the contracted hours for her fella are 0 they've lived there 20 yr he's worked at same place 21 yr and never done less than 40 hr 3 young kids and 2 cats never had enough money to save a deposit to buy and couldn't get mortgage due to 0 hours I'm in a 1 bed bungalow for oldies so no chance here but been gathering info on all this to help with social housing while recovering from pneumonia its a overload of info and departments that don't communicate one thing I can do is not be afraid to pester anyone to get answers so I will ...
On the other point of illness 9 hours in a corridor doctors exhausted and people turning up in droves at hospital reminded me of the film Threads and others I've seen ...and this is normal working weekdays !
The poor people who work anywhere like this deserve a medal I have a pretty significant first aid kit but I'm adding to it massively if the shtf for any reason at all it would take nothing to topple it.... its all that fragile anyhow ....

Sorry to hear all that. Housing is of course a big issue these days, with it costing so much. And the NHS has issues too, as you say. I hope you find some solutions.GeeGee wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2026 2:31 pm Daughter number 1 been served with a section 21 notice no fault eviction as the landlord has been honest and said he has no energy time or money to bring property up to the new standards required from may 1st when new rules come in

Trying to cool the house down a bit. I mean the actual fabric of the building, not just the air. I got the room temperature down in my room early yesterday evening, then mostly closed other windows, and my room shot back up! Because of the heat stored in the walls etc. I think it takes days to cool it down properly. So a quick airing is useless.
Friday is going to be hot again. I'm just making sure I don't need to dig the summer duvet out. I'm already using a Tog 1.5. Was fine last night anyway.
Done most of my summer rotation now. Mostly putting winter clothes away. Few bugout bag items. Cycling gloves and so on. I didn't cycle in winter, but it is my only vehicle.

GeeGee, all of that sounds terrible, I'm so sorry things are so hard for you and your family right now. I'm very lucky that even though I had no career plan at all, I fell into jobs that provided enough for me to buy a small property, and keep it up. As for illness, ug, I'm sure I could do with a checkup or so, but I just can't face the doctors. Hope you feel better soon, and get enough rest.GeeGee wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2026 2:31 pm Daughter number 1 been served with a section 21 notice no fault eviction as the landlord has been honest and said he has no energy time or money to bring property up to the new standards required from may 1st when new rules come in

My own preps: managed to get some seeds planted last week, and the courgettes sprang up almost right away
the kale has followed, and even a little basil spriglet has showed its head. I'd love lots of basil plants.
Got a delivery coming today from B&Q - compost, a stopcock key (the valve in the house doesn't work, last time a plumber was here he used the stopcock in the street), a chuck for my electric drill (I have one, it was my dad's, but I can't find it
so I *don't* have one), and hopefully the thing that started my order - a rotating composter, on steel legs, pretty much rat proof. I saw one being used on a UK blog Back To The Good Life, and I've wanted one for ages but they seemed really expensive. This was £35, seemed worth it.

Spent the last few weeks on the family's cars..
I saw the Iran thing kicking off and knew shtf was coming . I promptly ordered a bulk 20l barrel of engine oil which fortunately does my sisters , my wife's and my car so 3 cars all had oil and filters / a good look over .... That bulk 20l of synthetic oil which meets manufacturers specific codes for £42! Which was about the price of 4l in Halfords
Wife's car failed MOT on knackered rear shockers her shifts mean I hardly ever see her car or her some weeks so never got to give it a look over ... So few phone calls new shockers picked up for £80 a pair and half hour a side swapping them out ...
My car had a knocking front LHS wishbone bush fubar so ordered 2x wishbones to do both sides £34 each .. got to the drivers side and noticed the shocker was leaking so 2 new struts £40 each .... 2x new top bearing and rubber mount £15 each .. I also ordered a decent spring compressor set up... Plus service kits both cars and all ready for another year

Many more hours at the allotment. I have to say I impressed myself with the improvement. Surely now at the 75% cultivation target and tidier than some other plots.
Very few visible weeds. Some bindweed roots removed, but I'm not kidding myself: They'll soon sprout and flourish. Touch wood, marestail has not yet become conspicuous.
There are some bags and bins of non-compostables that need to be shifted off site. I understand that site inspection has already happened, before much of my recent efforts. They might rebuke me for such untidiness. and for some stuff I already remediated. Ho hum. Wait and see.
Graceful Degradation! Prepping's objective summed up in two words. Turning Disaster into Mild Inconvenience by the power of fore-thought

Our allotment has, apparently come under the eye of a new committee which has taken a controversially hard line. New broom sweeps clean attitude. Even the site manager is totally fed up with them. Apparently they just did a snap inspection ahead of the date scheduled without even telling the site manager.Yorkshire Andy wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2026 8:54 pmMuch as we moan out local town council is a lot more relaxed.. so far I've one rowbof spuds inin my defence it's all rotoervated ready to go. But we had a hard frost Saturday morning so not worth putting much out till they sod off likewise the greenhouse still a tip but I'm not burning paraffin at 2.50p per litre either
Rotorvating..... If I did that, I'd quintuple my harvest ( of perennial weeds ) As it was, I used a tarp over winter and when I pulled it back there were strug spuds growing: Result!
