First morning of heatwave 3. Realised I'd forgotten to plug the sides of my window. Done now. Portable A/C running. Attic is 32° already. I asked GPT and it reckons my loft is likely to go over 40. So the prep room being about the same as outside is not bad considering it's not insulated from above, has slates very close to the ceiling, and faces south.
That was 2 hours ago. Attic is now 38. It's 'only' 27-28 outside. And only 1.30 pm. Thermometer's not near the apex, and not on the side that got morning sun. So it's going over 40, no doubt, probably 45 on Friday.
Prep room is 27.
What Preps are you doing this week? Part 13
Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 13
Second week of attacking a wasp infestation under roofing tiles
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 13
That sounds nasty Pseudonym, How are you tackling it? Baited food or a spray?
We got rid of one in our loft using a Heath Robinson system that pointed a can of RAID at the nest entrance and allowed us to press the trigger and empty the entire canister without being anywhere near the nest. That let us shut the loft hatch and leave it to linger for a good while without poisoning ourselves or getting stung.
Another one went by accident when we put pyrethrum powder all over the bin bags after a party when we realised the wasps were getting onto them. The insecticide was slow enough acting that they took it back to the nest with the food waste.

Attic peaked at 44° today.
Prep room is 31.
Have moved lipo box and gas cannisters.
Am running the AC a degree warmer than last heatwave, and so far it's used quite a lot less electricity. Is using 0.5 kWh/h at the moment, up from 0.2 at 6 am. Last heatwave I was using 0.9 in the afternoons and evenings. But it's only day 2 so heat is still accumulating.

I think I like the sound of a beer keeper suit, especially in this heat.Yorkshire Andy wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2026 4:58 pmThat's the reason I bought a beer keepers suit at the charity shopused it twice now

If spraying from the outside and under the tiles Ficam 80 will resolve the issue. If inside and dealing with the nest we lay down plastic and use washing up liquid and water sprayed from a powerful hand sprayer. Simple and effective.
We keep a few nests active during spring and early summer as the wasps do a good job destroying pests in the garden but from Mid Summer we destroy all we can to protect our bee hives from them.

The medicine shortage is getting worse. SHMBO needs asthma medication. Tried to get the prescription yesterday but they didn't have one of the inhalers in. "Try tomorrow". Tried this morning - still not in. Had a word with the pharmacist who I know and indeed the shortage is now spilling over to other medications.
Only suggestion was either to wait until Monday or he print off the prescription and I try some of the big pharmacies like Boots or Tesco. OR if al else fails, go to A&E. Fortunately we can last into start of next week.
