Came home from work, power washed the two visitors parking bays and put weed resistant paving sand down not that it ever works.

What annoys me is that there’s four houses, three of us muck in to do the communal areas and one doesn’t. The one that doesn’t happily comes out and thanks us for the job we are doing but never lifts their hands to help.

However am I the problem by continuing to do it including their parking bay? I don’t like living in a tip so I end up doing it as it annoys me but the more I do it, the more this one household doesn’t….

Sorry rant over.

Kiwififer..the old saying if you want it doing do it yourself comes to mind ..but I'd be livid and leave gaps round the one that doesn't!
Been trying to help one daughter her fella and 3 grandkids who recieved a section 21 no fault eviction notice at the very end of April before the new rules came in 1 may
Been there 20 years never missed a rent payment house immaculate but landlord doesn't want all the new regulations so will sell
Will be going to court and no houses to go to as every rental seems to have half a dozen chasing it in the same boat local council cant help ..
I saw it coming a little while back as landlord older but daughter number 1 isn't as prepared for future incidents but is for the now ..the mindset of prepping is "if " it happens and she thinks I'm nuts .
Needless to say school holidays 3 upset kids one stressed out partner and a daughter sticking head in sand is hard work preps....
Patrolling the rental market non stop is exhausting ...
But they need a home so will persevere

More delivery issues. Amazon says Thursday, and Royal Mail say today, for my rug.

Also I ordered two things today that said delivery tomorrow (Thursday), because I am, or was, already expecting the rug, and as soon as I'd placed the order, it changed to Friday! I feel like I was scammed!

Anyway, I've got a few things this week, and will then take a break from ordering stuff, unless it can go to the Post Office.

Got a new saddlebag yesterday, to use instead of a pannier on short bike rides. It actually weighs slightly more than the pannier empty, but I've reduced the weight I carry on short summer bike rides, by maybe 3 kg or so. Also it's less wind resistance.

That is quite frankly, shite. We have a housing problem all over the entire country now and it’s not getting better as long as there’s a ‘buy to let’ system allowed. Trouble is, politicians in every party will have a property portfolio and turkeys never vote for Christmas.

I hope you get it sorted.

Email for the EMidlands:

What tomorrow's heat means for your electricity supply

Hot weather advice

12th August 2026

Hot weather doesn't just affect you, it affects your electricity network too.
It's set to be a warm one across the East Midlands tomorrow, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C in Lincolnshire, Leicester, Northamptonshire, Derby and Nottinghamshire. Overnight lows won't drop much below 16°C, so it'll stay warm well into the evening too.

Hot weather doesn't just affect you, it puts extra demand on the electricity network too. More homes switch on air conditioning and cooling systems, and our equipment has to work harder to keep up.

Our teams are ready

Roisin Quinn, Field Operations Director at National Grid Electricity Distribution

"During heatwaves, we look after our teams so they can continue to look after you, taking sensible breaks and carrying out more demanding jobs during the cooler parts of the day. This helps us restore power as quickly as we can, while keeping our people safe."

Want to know more about how hot weather affects the network? Watch our short video, Hot weather and the electricity network, to see it explained.

Our top tips for coping in hot weather:

Keep your fridge closed during a power cut. Your fridge will keep food safe for up to 4 hours, as long as the door stays shut.
Don't open your freezer. A full freezer will hold its temperature for around 48 hours (24 hours if it's half full), so long as you keep the door closed throughout.
Avoid using large appliances during peak heat. Washing machines, dishwashers and similar appliances generate extra heat and put more demand on the network, so it's best to use them earlier or later in the day.
Close your blinds or curtains during the day. This helps keep your home cooler and reduces how hard you need to work any fans or cooling appliances.
Charge a power bank in advance. If a power cut does happen, you'll still be able to use your phone to stay in touch, check for updates or call us if you need to.
Check any medication that needs to be kept cool. If you rely on medicines that must be refrigerated, keep an eye on their storage and speak to your pharmacist about what to do if your fridge is affected.

If your power goes off today

Report it straight away, we won't always know if you're affected. You can report a power cut and track updates at powercuts.nationalgrid.co.uk or call us on 105.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

29° at 10 am here in Manchester. Just realised I still had windows open!

Went out later to bring the washing in, 33 outside. Like walking into an oven.

I'm off to Lidl to buy a load of bottled water to shore up supplies, and a folding water container - they have 20l ones in for £3.99.

'Portable' AC used 9.9 kWh yesterday, keeping room at 23.3°. Actual setting is 25°. Outside was 33°. Landing was 27.6. Back bedroom reached 32°.

9.9 is considerably lower than the 17.5 I used when I ran it mostly a deg cooler in June on 34° days.

So, running it a degree cooler saves a lot.

It tends to back off, and run slightly warmer at night, as the air it detects near the window loses a bit of heat. But only a fraction of a degree.

It's expensive, but spread over a year it won't be a big increase on energy bills.

It's funny my darling wife who pitched a fit when the AC unit arrived in the post demanded I put it on last night  I was comfortable I'd been outside in the sun most of the day so the house felt cool :) slowly winning battles one prep at a time
