About growing lettuce 🥬😄

Post by jennyjj01 »

One for the veg growers. Article made me smile but also think.

In the wake of a contaminated lettuce crisis in the US, the post asks "Should we Stop eating lettuce" just eliminate it's growing, distribution and consumption.
It's 95% water.
Pita to grow without getting devoured by critters.
Has sod all nutrients.
Negligible shelf life and most gets discarded.
Can't be preserved.

Though the article was tongue in cheek, it did make me reconsider lettuce's place on my allotment and in my shopping basket. Will be using that space for corn, peas, onions and higher value veggies next year. Salad leaves can utilise the easier to grow dandelion 😄

Right, that's it. I'm not wasting any more time or money on lettuce. Even the one I grew on the windowsill got greenfly!

Buying lettuce doesn't work either. Who in this world has ever used a whole lettuce before it went manky?

I’m going to dig out my wild foraging books and harvest wild leaves instead. Sod lettuce for a game of soldiers.
