Red Doe wrote:Well...not to be indelicate, but I can tell you from personal experience when you get the flu, you can't really get out of bed. So at the first sign of it, load a box or table at your bedside/couch with soft drinks (though I recommend avoiding caffiene, flu can already strain the heart) and maybe some fruity bars, snack bars, that kinda thing, though you probably won't feel like eating much. Meds too, either paractamol and cough syrup or an all in one flu remedy. Plenty tissues, wet wipes, but....
when I had flu it was a real struggle to leave bed and go to the loo. I really recommend a small porta potti, or other type of 'instant' loo, because when I did go I fainted halfway there!
Sorry, I know it all sounds daft but real flu (as apposed to a virus or bad cold) really has you tied to bed for about a week or fortnight. That includes loo breaks :D
Good thought. When I had the flu I was so dehydrated I didn't need to go to the loo. It's so important to keep fluid intake up.

I can second that - I used to get flu all the time and I have often fainted halfway to the loo. usually a graceful slide down the hall wall  I take vit C & D itsy, and if you are ill then Night Nurse is terrific. Get a friend to pop round once every 24 hours to check on you and bring soup or juice and feed any animals.

I have a loo/sink upstairs so I wouldn'thave to try and hoof it down the stairs to get to the bathroom, thank God. It's about six foot from my bed - and believe me I would CRAWL there if I had to!

What about some kind of medicated cream, to rub on sore noses? Some kind of lip balm or moisturiser for chapped lips, too.

Where do you get that?

Rehydrating fluid- coca cola( any old brand)leave it to go flat .A community nurse told me this is what she recommends when a child has been ill. It is THE most available rehydration fluid out there. The reason she does this is because the people she deals with are poor. This is a real life, real world remedy

What Red Doe said !
The people who bravely soldiered into work with flu never had it - the real thing is a nightmare and it's nearly impossible to do anything. I got it when on my own and it took me 45 mins to get down the stairs to deal with the dog. While he went out to wee, I collapsed on the floor. So - Red Doe's advice is very apt - get flasks or jugs or bottles that you can put liquid in. Consider moving the kettle and drinking stuff to the bedroom at the start of it and have easy prepare hot meals for when you have enough strength to heat them up.
Better still - get a flu jab :)

Thanks Red Doe. BTW Winter medic box is a cracking idea!
I always keep similar, always with my eldest and my asthma in mind. Having been poorly the last fee weeks, obvious gaps showed. Winter is not even here yet!

Without hi jacking thethread , could I suggest keeping anti-diarrohea medicine in? Coupled with the above- mentioned rehydration, it really could save your life.
