Havnt been on for a while, i was talking to my girlfriends mum who is a nurse, and she told me something interesting, she always has garlic oil capsules in the medicine cupboard and apparently taking 5 capsules is the equivalent of an antibiotic, just thought I'd share with you all (sorry if it's already been mentioned) but I think antibiotics would become very difficult to come by if anything happens and garlic oil can be bought easily to add to your preps for the future, I'm going to be ordering a couple of books on edible wild foods and natural medicines, but if anyone else knows of any other medical tips I'd be grateful, cheers
I'm not absolutely sure that this is correct.

I know that garlic has some antibacterial qualities but to say that a large dose is the equivalent of an antibiotic is, I believe, flawed.

Rubbing a garlic clove on a small cut may be beneficial and aid healing but its use fighting a full blown infection (say, a tooth abscess) is slight to non-existent.

On a lighter note, if I may offer my support to The-gnole, we have a family saying as follows "An apple a day keeps the doctor away but an onion a day keeps everyone away"

Good for toothache / filling loss where no dentist is available...

Ask Dustin Hoffman

Is it safe?

 For me that's one of the most scariest scenes in a film
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Clove oil is perfectly safe on a toothache but do not swallow it in any quantity, as it can damage liver and kidneys. Common sense...a wee dribble of it going down your throat won't do any harm but don't take spoonfuls of it! On top of which, it has a numbing, slightly burning effect, wouldn't be very pleasant. ;)
I've been waiting two years for a dental trip to hospital, 120 mile away, to have three broken molars removed. (got it for a week on Monday, yippee, broken molars due to tooth grinding because of stress!) and have been off and on antibiotics during that time almost continuously as one of them is infected. It hasn't been a healthy experience and I would love an alternative but in reality there isn't one at the moment. It's screwed up my immune system and gut.
Anyways, I use clove oil when it's painful and it's excellent stuff, dentists use it in proprietory tooth fillings used in root canals for it's antiseptic and numbing properties even today. :)
Thanks, pseudonym, for the tip about the nail polish! Might give it a try on the midge bites. :D

I am not sure if this is true but my great aunt has an old cure which tastes horrible for a cold. You make a cup of tea and then you add two spoonfulls of honey and a good squirt of lemon. As I said it is horrible but I went from shivering with a blaket over me and tissues stuck underneath my nose to being normal within the hour.

Honey and lemon isn't too unusual but I've not tried it with tea as well :O
Seems like a waste of a good teabag, keep em seperate and youll feel twice as good :D (not based on clinical information, results may vary)

There really is no "cure" for a cold, seven days with medication or a week without, everything taken will just relieve the symptoms.
