Agree Jansman, esp if you're born & bred there - stay put would be best. We're the same up here.

Hopefully, after a few hours all migration will be halted by the govenment or traffic jams.
Anywhere more than 1 days walk will be pretty dam safe for a good while id bet.

Im a buggin in, I have no other option.tfish wrote:For those who plan to stay home and ride out whatever storm is occurring to the outside world
What are your reasons for choosing this path?
Is simply you don’t have a option as the countryside is too far away or you don’t have experience of it enough to be confident to be able to scrap a living there?
How do you intend to protect you home from looters? gather rain water if need be? where will you put your human waste? etc
I am ex forces and know the countryside, but it is not an option for me.
I will have enough food and water to see me through 3 or 4 months, this should be enough time for local authorities to get on the ball, unless its a nuclear problem which will be too late for me as having a tank building factory 2 miles north, 2 ordanance factories 4 miles south, and a 2 mile strip of engineering factories 1 mile west of me i think i would reach 1million degress in less than a second if the nuclear problem htf.
Im not sure what im prepping for, but if i have a load of food and water in constant supply then it will give me a chance of survival, and i do have large supplies of food and water, if it goes nuclear i dont stand a chance, but for the sake of buying a few extra provisions a week and storing them i think its worth it.
If tshtf and im still alive, i will have a chance because of my food and water storage, will ration my supplies, poo in bags, etc etc, however, i have no choice but to buggin, we are situated on an overly populated tiny island, where would you go?

1. Depending what the event is, i'm bugging in if at all possible. I live in a good spot, I have all my kit there, I know the neighbours, I know the area. I can bugout in the camper at very short notice if required. End of the day its like gnole said in the other thread, do a Risk Assesment, if it's unsafe I will leavetfish wrote:For those who plan to stay home and ride out whatever storm is occurring to the outside world

2. 2 minutes walk and i am in the countryside, but why rough it in the woods by choice if it is safe to stay at home....see Risk Assesment
3. Looters, Plenty you can do to make your place look uninviting, uninhabited, or too risky to attack.....have a look on the LSG forum and look up a thread called "The 5 "D"'s by British Red". A very indepth article that discusses everything from deterring intruders from approaching to defence against attackers and plenty more inbetween. The basic premise is if you have to resort to Stage 5 of the "D"'s (which is defence if i remember right) you have failed in implementing the other 4 options
4. Gathering water..... Water Butts, a nearby River, stored bottled water, A decent water Filter, Bleach
5. Human Waste....dispose of it in a hole, or use the chemical loo in the camper
If I lived next door to a Crack Den or in the UK equivalent to Mogadishu then maybe I would disappear at the first sign of trouble, I dont so I plan on staying all the time it is safe to do so.
End of the day you do what is right in your own particular situation, there is no one size fits all answer

Doubtful rayman, they will more likely use conventional means for that, the probability of a nuclear strike on every MoD linked establishment in the UK is minimal.I will have enough food and water to see me through 3 or 4 months, this should be enough time for local authorities to get on the ball, unless its a nuclear problem which will be too late for me as having a tank building factory 2 miles north, 2 ordanance factories 4 miles south, and a 2 mile strip of engineering factories 1 mile west of me i think i would reach 1million degress in less than a second if the nuclear problem htf.
In the mean time get some factor 5million sun screen just in case

Forting Up ?
Always planned to. No way can we afford to maintain a separate BOL, the house and prep. The past few years of prepping have been aimed at Forting Up and the house and garden reflect that choice if you know what too look for.
3ft thick stone walls. Slate Roof. No foot access to the ground floor from the street. Only door at front of property is on the first floor. (weird but love it).
Rear access is through a rather strong gate system. Including drop bar.
Neighbour next door built a wall between us with a 16ft drop onto my property. (wow did he do me a favour)
Water source close by, area not prone to flooding etc.
1200 sq ft of garden. Garden drops down from the hose. Fruit bearing trees. Raised Beds, large green house. Also long enough for small archery range.
Meh.

Re: Buggin In
Hi
First post so be gentle
I have always planned to fort up. I live on a small farm and like most farming families have the "my land is my castle" mentality. We have some livestock but no veg or fuit this being the frozen north so my prep plans include a goodly amount of laid in freeze dried vegetables etc. We also, again like most farms have good infrastructure and so on: generators, fuel stores, workshops, vehicles etc.
One little extra that we have is a bunker... yes a real bunker, WW2 vintage. so I guess some of you want to know where I live now
Last resort we also have a bug out plan to pastures new.
Anyhow opinions and comments welcome.

Re: Buggin In
Thanks
We do try to be thinking about preps which we also need to do for our business however there are a few (mostly expensive) things that are on the "Have Not" list that need to be addressed.
Water is the most pressing as we do not have much of a supply and it all ultimatly comes from the mains.
Also the whole issue of armouring (forting up) that has seemed to creep into our awareness over the last few months. I dont like the idea of doing all this work so that someone else can benefit from it.
Ideas welcome
