Vertical Can Storage

Post by KalPrep »

So, I saw and searched a few can storage ideas and had one problem with them all, they all stuck out like mad and took up a lot of floor space. I don't have too much of that but generally you find the vertical being less utilised so I decided to have a go at designing something.

I have a small utility that stays lovely and cool even in summer as we have pretty much turned the radiator in there completely off so no heating. Design below is based on the unit sitting above the current radiator as I would be hard pressed to get the missus to let me take the rad out and double stack the units

The design is componentised such that the width is only dependant on how many units you can fit and the design allows for a double stack (with space to get cans in the bottom row) by adjusting the height of the outside panels. If going for more than 5 sections in width, I would probably add another central end panel to ensure a solid unit.

In total using the sample can component, the unit can hold around 130 cans in the configuration shown with 27 standard cans per vertical component. I haven't yet figured the best means for stopping the cans as a ledge or wedge would limit the ability to get the cans out of the unit easily, I will probably try a few configurations when I get something built. I also plan to put two strips of door draught sealer in the verticals to reduce damage to the cans by slowing the fall to the top can.

General Dimensions:

Overall Height : 1.8m
Overall Width : 70cm
Overall Depth : 24cm
Weight : It'll be bloody heavy for sure!!
Construction : 3,6,12,18mm MDF

Any comments/suggestions/flames welcomed and if anyone wants the source file, I use Google Sketchup for this sort of stuff so if you can use that, you can mess around with the components yourself.

P.S the design is true scale and therefore accurate for cutting relevant board, given I have a glut of spare MDF in 12,18mm depths that's what I will be using.

Could you spare 8" of space behind a sofa, or headboard, or elsewhere?

Hi Kal

Design looks good, but (there's always a "but" :D ) looking at the bottom of the diagram, what damage would be caused to tins four and five by dropping more tins down slots.

Also would that forth tin be able to move with the weight of all the other tins pushing down on it?

Just my first thoughts.

Gnole, I like that shelf-storage link. Do you think it could be made using the box covers for radiators?

I saw something similar on youtube, but instead of the cans being stacked vertcially, they were stacked at an angle, so they 'rolled' gently forward when you removed one. I will see if I can find the video and post it.

But without the radiators, no problem, it might only be a one can depth one though. The other can store I put up a few months back would fit nicely into a kitchen unit with a bit of alteration.

I think you posted in one of the other threads about it, it was kind of the inspiration for this. :D

Given my particular house, we don't have a lot of floor space so the more horizontally focused ones can be used but I won't end up with the same density of cans in the overall volume. Also to the potential damage from the vertical drop, I am betting on the inclusion of the foam door sealer strips to slow the cans down. Still details to work out :)

I like the one Gnole posted, just don't don't have that floor space to spare or I would probably aim for something like that in the first instance.

How about in book cases? But I guess it depends on available wall space as well, under beds is good as well.

But it is difficult trying to get a quart in a pint pot sometimes.

I'm going to look into the radiator box covers to use for my Moms' house, she was saying the other day that she wants to start prepping but has no space for anything, so if she can have a "decorative" shelving system, then she might think about fulling up the empty spaces in her house that I pointed out to her that she actually does have - her excuse was she didn't have any shelving and didn't want to just put plastic boxes with stuff in all over the house, so this now solves the problem. Doesn't matter if is only one can width, it will be better than not having anything at all.
