It might take longer but try pre-soaking rice to soften it, another way is to make a pressure cooker to cook it in, this will use less fuel to cook the rice.
Another way is to put the rice into a thermos flask of hot water and leave until cooked.

I cook rice on a regular basis - if you soak a cup of rice for 15 minutes if cooks in approximately 10 minutes in pre-boiled water. Soak for 30 minutes (which is usually down with basmati rice) cooks in 5 minutes in pre boiled water

Hi there peeps, thanks for all your comments, I have purchased a few packs of the chicken & others......and found portions a little small but other than that to be excellant!.. I would definatly recomend b-prep.com

If we have an EOTWAWKI event I don't think I'll survive 25 years so I'll give these a miss (plus apart from the peas, sweetcorn and rice there's nothing I can eat). But the guy does have a very useful article (http://www.b-prep.co.uk/further-reading ... ed-4-w.asp ) about economic collapse which might be worth showing to any significant others who aren't on board.

It puts me at ease knowing I have food on the shelf. for me & mine that's going to last above & beyond 25-30+ yrs if shtf ever!
I do recall having a read of that artical, but can't seem to remember much so should have another read realy!
