The article is from the New Scientist, and the research appears impeccable. Don't know how the prehistoric bloke *felt* after this treatment, of course, but seems very interesting:

I always keep one of those travellers dental repair kits in stock.

Apparently the temporary fillings are quite durable and get official dental approval.

Also some oil of cloves - tastes foul and burns but does relieve pain. Mind you it does act as a reminder to see a dentist NOW before TSHTF.
