......a treeless hammock it is!
I have a number of disputes regarding the set up in this video.

1. The hammock he uses is the worst type of hammock you can ever have. (I have tried one) It's too small, even for someone of my stature. They're very uncomfortable, and would be very cold if used in the way depicted in the video. i.e. No insulating layer beneath you.

2. The angle it is set up at would cause you to slide down in it.

3. IF you did manage to sleep in it and you woke up in the night, there's a good chance you would bang your head on the ridgepole if you sat up and forgot about it.

4. It's too close to the ground. This would allow all sorts of critters to get to you in the night, especially in the USA.

5. Regarding his knots. He needs to learn his knots again. His Square Knot was an Overhand Knot. His first so called Prusik Hitch was a Girth Hitch - Only when he made the second pass did it become a Prusik Hitch (4 Finger). The Taut Line Hitch wasn't. A proper TLH is a Slide and Grip Friction Hitch used to apply tension to a line. After several attempts, he made a correctly tied Clove Hitch. (Trust me, I know my way around a piece of string :ugeek: )

Now, that said, I know the guy was just showing a way of rigging a hammock if no standing trees were available, and I appreciate Munchh putting the idea out there, I just think that there is probably a better way of doing this. Would just take a little thought.

yeah, you sort of have to skip through his videos alot, its the only one i had found for the treeless hammock.

The rest, i pay no mind too, i think that hammock would be ok to put your gear in and hoist it up a tree so the critters didnt get in it overnight, but thats it.

Good idea to use it to hoist your gear up into a tree. A friend of mine has one of those net type hammocks, and what he sometimes does is rig it below his main hammock to keep his gear in to keep insects out and protect gear from the wet ground. They do make a half decent seat though, and would make a good gill net. ;)

Yeah I'm the friend with one of those string hammocks, useless for sleeping in, the one time I've tried sleeping in it I gave up about 5am and opted for the floor instead. A point I'd like to make about the vid is if you've got some branches to rig up your treeless hammock then it's a good bet there is trees around, doh!

I have a DD Travel hammock as part of my 10 piece sleep system. The great thing about them is that they have a waterproof bottom so they can be used as a bivi on the ground when there are no trees about.

If you are with wood so to speak they also double up as a comfy seat during the day, plus your mozzy protection is built in. I like my kit to be flexible! :-)

check out the hennesy expedition hammock. i use mine whenever i go camping and its so comfy. they are about £120 so a bit pricey but definately worth it. it all fits into a snugpak response pack too which is about the size of a bum bag.....( if its still called that).

i also have a hennessy hammock and find it brilliant a couple of things i would recommend to do are get the bigger hex fly sheet as the one that comes with the hammock i find a tad small, also get 2 pair of snake skins 1 for the fly sheet and 1 for the hammock as this keeps any water/moisture away from the hammock when packing away if wet also this allows you to put up the fly first and unpack underneath, i would also recommend getting 2 carabiners and 4 rappel ring to use setting up hammock as shown in this video http://youtu.be/1iJTjful66M makes it really fast and easy and finally under quilts can be expensive and bulky get yourself an army poncho liner with a few adjustments and some thin bungee cord works great

I mainly use a warbonnet blackbird xl, its a cinched end hammock from the US. Had a zip off mosi net that can be replaced with a top cover so you're sort of cocooned, warmer for winter camping. It's pretty wide and has a foot box that allows for an asymmetrical lay so you're pretty much laying flat. Very comfortable. I use their superfly tarp with this as well which is made of silnylon and packs very small and is lightweight. I don't think you can beat hammock camping but it does seem to be marmite

as a (ex) member of our group found out not everywhere(especially on the moors) has trees to hang them from! if someone is bugging out with one it might be something to remember.
