Snip> Not cheap at all and neither are the replacement filters, however, right now I am considering it money well spent.
Agreed

Snip> It could filter the 1000 litres in the IBC if needed in an emergency and we can and probably will use it for camping. I have a couple of small Sawyers, but wanted something a bit more substantial.
Redundancy. Great planning.

Snip> The cost was a toss up between a couple of nights away somewhere or the water filter, I chose the water filter
I'm the same with Powerbanks
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
Well I was just about to do a bug-out test run, aka bike ride, when I suddenly could hear wind and rain. Tree was bending. Not the best combo on a Saturday, when there is more traffic. I knew it was gonna be iffy today. Got everything ready as well!
So went to get my first In Post locker delivery. Found them at Sainsburys, outside in car park. I used the app to remote open (rather than scanning bar code). Took a few goes, but the locker opened. Was from Uniqlo, a base layer top. Is ok but not ideal fit. And has a chemical smell. Won't be buying more.
Grabbed a couple of "supermarket" packs of logs for the outdoor oven if we need to use it got a few packs already but a few more won't hurt.... Will get the chop saw out at some point and chop them to size ready rather than struggle on a cold winters night with the bow saw
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong
Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine
Found a better way to check the weather. The map on the Met Office app on my phone is easy to scroll in 15 minute increments, over several hours (or even days). You just touch it, and slide your finger to drag the time line along. Way better than a play button. It's colour coded for how heavy the rain is. It also has a 'past 6 hours tab'. This picked up a heavy shower half an hour earlier, and showed it in red, as 32mm/hour, which is very heavy. Other apps picked up no rain at all, or light rain. From now on I'm using this before a bike ride. There is no way I'm going out in a 32mm/h shower!
Cheap and a back up to the wind up one I already have
We’ve got one, they’re currently on Amazon at £13.89 we were pleasantly surprised, it’s kept together
with a 20ft long wire with a small crocodile clip on one end to extend the aerial should a we need
too pull in faint signals. Pocket size and good for a BOB.
The emergency funds budget has had a workout.
Replacement storage bed has cost a grand. But we are sleeping so much better on it that it should prove money well spent.
And I need another grand for dental work this week. Again, money well spent, but proves the point that an emergency fund is an essential prep to be able to cope when life strikes back.

Very true. And let's not forget cheap loans. My loan for decorating only costs £14 a month interest. But it preserved my depleted savings, which got hammered by my re-roof saga. The interest rate on a slightly smaller loan would have been DOUBLE, so be aware of that. Mine is 6.7%. £14 is the average, it's more at the moment as I've not had it long.
Temps are dropping fast after tomorrow. Retired my bike trunk bag for the winter, and loaded up my pannier. It can hold a lot more, so I can carry a proper waterproof, different gloves etc.
Had to get another quote for the flue liner as the chimney sweep who told us we needed one never got back to us with a quote. Unfortunately, it's going to be another few weeks before he can do the work. We can still use the log burner in the other room, although it is quite small and I might have to use the oil radiator to warm the room until then as we don't want to use the heating oil in case we need that later in winter. Decided that the copper tank I put a picture up of recently is going to be a bit dicey on top of the stove so am going to make a brick/block rocket stove in the garden if needed.
