Yep, seems reasonable to me

If they're going to lift you, they have to go through the spiel - you know, ''you have the right to remain silent'' etc etc. So wherever you are, there will be a solicitor at some point in the proceedings. Trick is not to fall for the ''it'll be ok if you tell us about it mate'' crap a lot of coppers come out with! Never, ever, ever speak to the police after arrest without a solicitor present. Don't even say ''blue'' if they ask you what colour the sky is.

Know your rights - and exercise them!

Getting really pedantic now , 12mp82 , so you've beaten someone senseless with a walking stick , but you walk around without an aid of any kind

Im not telling people to break the law , just make sure YOU have a VALID reason for having a big ********(insert choice by your front door )

Whatever the legality of stoving someones head in with it :D it is a rather expensive wrecking bar! I have an old-style crowbar. £5. Boy I have trashed some buildings, recycled pallets etc. with that tool. Also the FUBAR is made by Stanley. A company about as good as Black and Decker! Regarding the mini version of said tool, the mini version of mine is in Poundland.

I don't but my old dad is always forgetting his stick when he drives around here, having a walking stick by the door has a better range of options than having a hammer/fubar
I keep it hanging in the pride of place next to the flat door as an equaliser. Since it's a blunt tool it's legal to hurt an intertuder with it
Do you see that?

For this off topic bit of the conversation, I just leave my tripod nearby any photographer on here will most likely know how sturdy and bomb proof a decent sturdy tripod is. That is for sure a defensive weapon and fully extended has about a 6ft reach.

I think that what ever you use the "don't say anything" is a high priority. The othert is "appropriate force" if you feel that the lives of you or your family are in imminent danger you will get away with a lot. But once someone is down you have to stop hitting them and not find better tool to protect yourself

If you have something hanging buy the door it is a weapon and your using it could be classed as planned therefore assault. If it is the first thing you can grap to defend yourself it is just that, and unlucky for the intruder. If you keep a sturdy walking pole as a suvinior from your holiday in an umbrella stand by the door it could easily be the first thing you could grab as could the fubar in your tool bag.

I keep my golf clubs near the front door and it just happend a tool bag is very near the back door.. Don't forget things like fishing rods the end of those hurts like buggery and is a great deterent. :)

Once someone is down, I'm going to be digging out something to restrain them with and making sure they're going to survive!

As I sit here now, I'm surrounded by my work tools. Hammers, small anvil, all sorts of mandrels, any amount of sharp and pointy things, scalpels, a drill and lots of throwing ammunition. There's also the OH, and the hellhounds, who go off like an alarm when someone so much as looks at the door. The downside of this is that most of what I have to hand would probably do fairly substantial damage - I use old sock knitting needles as mandrels, and they're about 18ins long, steel and pointed at each end! Biggest hammer is a nice sturdy ballpeen. I wouldn't want to hit someone on the head with that, although I'd be quite happy to aim for their kneecaps and shins.

At the end of the day, though, what matters is making sure the family are ok. We don't bother with locking the door here; there's no need. Crime rates are exceptionally low, car crime is virtually unheard of and the local police have a detection rate of something like 80%. I've never felt safer. The city smarts come back when we visit 'civilisation', and I can still read a street, so I just enjoy the peace here and am thankful that being attacked is highly unlikely these days.

Restraint is different and a separate issue but I'd likely cable tie a hand to a heavy object. :) for my own safety of course!

Redskies sounds like you live a good place. Doors here are unlocked when we are in. Used to live in the wilds and didn't even have a key for my front door. But now in the city think it was wiser to have them
